The debate over vouchers and tax credits isn’t just a national issue. Minnesota and other states are considering bills that would divert their own funds from public to private schools. Proponents say vouchers and tax credits are a way to close the achievement gap by giving students of color the option of leaving a public school not meeting their needs. Opponents say that research and experience prove they not only don’t work, but they also violate the constitution’s call for a separation of church and state.
